If you are a new chess player who wants to get an affordable, yet high-quality chess set for your vacation or travels, this list will get you started! Every new chess player who wants to both improve their game and play chess wherever they are will need a travel chess set. Fortunately, there are many options out there, but unfortunately, there are a huge variety of options and prices available.

In this article, I will be sharing my top 5 list of the best travel chess sets for beginning chess players. I'll share with you my favorite affordable, high-quality, and appealing chess sets that you can take with you anywhere. Let's begin with my number 5 selection.

The AMEROUS Golden/Silver Magnetic Chess Set is a fantastic choice if you want a stylish and practical chess set. The pieces come in gold and silver colors and all the pieces are made out of durable HIPS plastic. The bases of all the pieces have felt which allows the pieces to slide noiselessly across the board and to give the set a luxurious feel.

The metal board has plastic rims and is magnetic to hold the pieces to the surface of the board which makes this set very convenient for long car, train, airplane, etc. trips. The pieces are resistant to being knocked over from a bumpy ride or from an accidental brush of a hand. The set also comes with two extra Queens which is a must-have for any chess set.

The board can be folded in half to store the pieces inside for convenient storage and is small enough to be transported easily. Its dimensions are 9.8 inches x 9.8 inches.

The set is priced at $13.99 and is conveniently available on Amazon here.

This chess set sold by Amerous is another very high-quality chess set, with a durable board and pieces. This set has a less extravagant color scheme with simplistic white and black pieces. The bottom of each piece has a felt pad to allow the pieces to glide noiselessly across the board. The pieces are constructed with high-quality HIPS plastic and the set comes with two extra Queens.

The board and pieces are magnetic meaning that the pieces are resistant to being knocked off the board and are especially suitable for bumpy trips. The board is made of metal and the rims are molded from plastic. The board is 10 inches by 10 inches at about 1-inch height once unfolded.

For the low price of $14.99, it is tough to beat this great beginner chess set! You can check out this set on Amazon here.

WE Games is a company that I've purchased many times from, and am always impressed with their quality and fast shipping times. This set is extremely easy to travel with which is why I have added it to this list. It should be noted ahead of time that there are no real pieces, and that instead flat magnetic discs are given with each piece's symbol printed on it.

The set comes with extra Queens which is always important and the set folds up nicely into a compact and easily transportable booklet. The set also comes with two blank pieces so that if you do happen to lose a piece, you will be able to quickly replace it by either drawing on the symbol or letter of the missing piece (per chess notation).

This set is the easiest to pack in any bag and take with you on your travels, but if you prefer the feel of real pieces in your hand, then perhaps taking a look at the other options on this list would be best. The folded board measures 10.5 x 0.25 x 5.5 inches and 10.75 x 16 inches.

At the cheap price of $14.99 this set is in high demand, but you can get yourself a unit on Amazon here.

If you would prefer a more authentic feel, then this beginner's chess set is for you! This board is made of real wood with metal clips to fasten the board together when folded in half. The pieces too are made of wood to give an unmatched feel while playing chess and also comes with two extra Queens.

This stylish set stores the pieces on the inside of the board, which once folded in half allows for easy packing into suitcases or backpacks. The board measures at 12 inches by 12 inches and stands at around 1 inch tall once laid out flat. The bottom of each piece is coated with felt so that the pieces slide effortlessly across the surface of the board. As with each of the previous sets, this wooden set has magnetic pieces and board which prevents your game from toppling over from a pothole in the road.

This set is priced at $25.99 and is available on Amazon here.

This travel chess set is a bit smaller than the others, measuring in at 7 inches by 7 inches, making it very easy to stick into any corner of your backpack or duffle bag as you prepare for your trip. The board and pieces are made out of wood making this set ultra-durable, and the set folds in half for easy transportation.

The pieces each have felt coatings on the underside and are stored on the inside of this set but unfortunately do not include extra Queens. The miniature size of this set and the excellent craftsmanship of this item do help to overlook the fact that the set comes with only two Queens.

This chess set is available on Amazon here for the price of $18.99.

Conclusion

I really hope that this short guide helps you to make the best choice possible for your travel chess set purchase.
